Summer Holidays: 20 Ideas That Keep Young Minds Busy

Parenting no screens neededSummer Fun

Seven weeks is a long time. Without a plan, summer slides into late mornings and long hours on screens. With a light plan, it becomes the time children remember: the summer they learnt to swim, made a comic book or grew tomatoes.

For ages 3 to 6

  • Water play with cups and bottles in a bucket
  • A sticker chart for helping at home
  • Clay and dough modelling
  • A daily story from the library box
  • Sorting games with buttons, beads or pulses

For ages 7 to 10

  • Make a comic book about the family
  • Grow a plant from seed and keep a growth diary
  • Learn one board game properly: chess, ludo or carrom
  • Cook one simple dish each week with a parent
  • Write a postcard to a grandparent every week

For ages 11 and up

  • Read one book a week and write three lines about it
  • Learn to swim, cycle or skate
  • Start a small coding project
  • Plan the family budget for one outing
  • Interview a grandparent about their childhood

For the whole family

  • A weekly walk in a new part of the city
  • A visit to a museum, zoo or science centre
  • One screen-free evening a week
  • A family talent show at the end of the holidays
  • Volunteer together at a local shelter or temple kitchen

What about holiday homework?

Our holiday homework is light on purpose: a little reading, a small project and a few worksheets. Spread it across the weeks rather than doing it all on the last two days.

Parents also ask

Does the school run a summer camp?

Yes, a two-week summer camp with art, sports, dance and science is held in May. Details are shared on the app in April.

When do summer holidays start?

Usually in the third week of May. Exact dates are in the Academic Calendar.

Is holiday homework compulsory?

Yes, but it is light. It keeps reading and writing going during the long break.
