Admissions
before you decide12 Questions
Few decisions feel as big as picking a school, and it is often made after one short visit. These twelve questions help you use that visit well. Ask them at every school you see, including ours, and compare the answers.
About learning
- What is the class size? And in Pre-Primary, how many grown-ups are in each room?
- How do you teach reading in the early years? Look for a clear method, not just "we use good books".
- How will I know how my child is doing? Ask about reports, parent-teacher meetings and how often you can meet the class teacher.
- Is there extra help for a child who struggles with a subject? Remedial classes, small groups or extra worksheets: there should be a plan.
About safety
- Who can enter the campus? A good school has one gate, a visitor register and ID cards.
- Can I see the bus? Check for GPS, a camera, first aid and a woman attendant.
- Who looks after my child if they fall ill at school? Ask to see the medical room.
- How are staff checked before they join? Police verification should be standard for everyone, drivers included.
About fees and everything else
- Can I see the full fee list for the year? Ask for every charge in writing: admission, annual, tuition, bus, books and uniform.
- How are fees paid, and when? Instalments, due dates and the late-fee rule should be clear.
- What is included in the fee? Sports, music, labs, trips and activities: which ones cost extra?
- Can I talk to a parent whose child studies here? A school that is proud of itself will happily arrange it.
Look at the small things too
Watch how teachers talk to children in the corridor. Look at the toilets, the drinking water and the library shelves. Notice whether children look relaxed. Small things tell you more than big buildings do.
